Quick action at Eastlight hub helps save visitor’s life
A visitor to our Marks Tey hub is recovering after staff acted quickly when he showed signs of a stroke.

The 81-year-old man had been passing by the Marks Tey industrial estate when he began to feel unwell and looked for help. He came into Eastlight’s hub and spoke to a member of the facilities team.
Our Facilities Manager, Helen Symonds, who is First Aid trained, quickly recognised the common signs of a stroke – including slurred speech, a drooping face and difficulty raising both arms. Acting without delay, she called 999, helped the visitor to a safe seat and kept him alert until help arrived.
Although initial advice suggested an ambulance could take around 40 minutes, paramedics reached the scene in under five minutes. The man was then taken to hospital, where doctors found a serious blockage in one of his arteries. He underwent a major 10-hour operation, which was successful.
Doctors later said that acting quickly made a significant difference to his chances of survival.
The resident has since been in touch to thank staff for their support and for helping to save his life.
This incident highlights just how important it is to recognise the symptoms of a stroke and act fast. Remember the FAST signs:
- Face – has it fallen on one side?
- Arms – can the person raise both arms?
- Speech – is it slurred or unclear?
